二、讲座内容和讲座人简介

Towards the synergy of corpus-based and genre-based approaches to EAP writing research and pedagogy

In this talk I argue for and outline the research agenda of a framework that integrates corpus-based and genre-based approaches to EAP writing research and pedagogy, drawing upon the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach to genre and a discourse-functional approach to lexico-grammatical analysis. This framework posits two fundamental goals of EAP writing research and pedagogy, i.e., to help novice EAP writers develop adequate knowledge of the rhetorical moves and communicative functions characteristic of EAP discourse and become proficient in making appropriate lexico-grammatical choices to effectively materialize and organize such moves and functions. To these ends, research in this framework involves compilation of corpora of expert and novice EAP writing in different disciplines annotated for rhetorical moves and sentence-level communicative functions, development of computational tools to automate move and function annotation, systematic analysis and description of the distribution of such moves and functions and the lexico-grammatical patterns associated with them in expert and novice corpora, use of the annotated corpora in EAP writing pedagogy to promote novice EAP writers’ awareness of the moves and functions and their associated lexico-grammatical patterns, and use of the annotated corpora as a resource to assist novice EAP writers in the writing and revision process. I consider issues related to discipline specificity, bottom-up vs. top-down methodologies, and context and illustrate the usefulness of this framework using examples from several recent and ongoing research efforts.

陆小飞,俄亥俄州立大学语言学博士,现任美国宾夕法尼亚州立大学应用语言学系副教授和研究生部主任,广东外语外贸大学英文学院 云山讲座 教授,华中科技大学外国语学院客座教授。在语料库语言学领域享有较高的国际声誉,已在Applied Linguistics, Educational Researcher, International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, Language Testing, TESOL QuarterlyThe Modern Language Journal国际权威期刊发表学术论文二十余篇,出版语料库语言学研究专著Computational Methods for Corpus Annotation and Analysis (Springer, 2014)
